It has been sighted with regularity since 1832. Its footprints and tracks documented thousands of times. Its existence, murmured in the folklore of the region, dates back as far as the 4th century BC. Expeditions have setoff in search of it. All have returned in failure.
Wanting to impress upon their readers the sense of terror supposedly caused by the creature, Western newspapers dubbed the creature "The Abominable Snowman." The local peoples, living in the crevices and wastelands of the Himalayas, hailed it by another name. The "Magical Creature." The Yeti.
Description
The origin of the Yeti has been clouded in speculation for centuries. Some say it is descended from a race of giant apes, the "Gigantophitecus," who retreated into the Himalayas some 500,000 years ago. Another theory claims it is a descendant of the "A-o-re," an ancient people who, fleeing their enemies, escaped into the mountains and devolved into a race of monstrous creatures.
Various footprints have been attributed to the beast. Measuring roughly 12 ½ by 6 ½ inches, they indicate a creature of large stature, with a height of about seven feet. The Yeti is said to have white hair, although others claim it to be gray. The creature is reported to be extremely strong and have a terrible odor about it. The locals claim it makes a whistling sound and is sometimes heard roaring like a lion.
Habitat
The Yeti is said to live above the snowline in the Himalayan Mountains sprawling between Nepal and Tibet. Legend holds that spirits and demons inhabit the higher slopes of the Himalayas, while the Yeti inhabits the lower reaches.
The Yeti is considered to be a vegetarian except in cases where a shortage of food drives the creature to modify its cuisine. It is also rumored that the creature is fond of strong alcohol. The Yeti can be aggressive and often mischievous, raiding local crops and then fleeing when humans approach.
Questions remain. Is the Yeti a subhuman animal? A prehistoric remnant survived from the distant past? A seemingly endless sea of evidence exists in various legends, folklore, and religions, containing clues that are sometimes repetitive and often conflicting.
